Borrowing at the Law Library

Extended lending is available at the Law Library. Members of the University may borrow items published in 2000 or later that are held in Bodleian Offsite Storage.

Materials on the open shelves in the Law Library remain available for reference use only and may not be borrowed.

Who can borrow?

  • Current members of the University of Oxford with a valid University card may borrow eligible items from the Law Library by requesting them from Bodleian Offsite Storage.
  • Bodleian Reader card holders may use the library for reference only and are not permitted to borrow. If you are not a member of the University, find out more about how to apply for a Bodleian Reader card.

What can be borrowed?

  • Items labelled ‘Loanable’ on SOLO may be borrowed. This includes books held in Bodleian Offsite Storage published from the year 2000 onwards, unless they fall within an excluded category.
  • Items labelled ‘Use in Library Only’ on SOLO must be consulted within the library and cannot be taken out on loan. This category includes all materials on the open shelves in the Law Library.
  • For further guidance on borrowing, please speak to staff at the Enquiry Desk or contact law.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

How to borrow

To collect items requested from Bodleian Offsite Storage for delivery to the Law Library, bring your University card to the Enquiry Desk near the main entrance on the second floor. Library staff will issue the items to your account.

Borrowing allowances and loan periods

  • The Bodleian Libraries borrowing policy applies to all lending libraries, including the Law Library. Find out more about borrowing from the Bodleian Libraries, including how many items you can borrow, loan periods and automatic renewals.
  • You can reserve items currently on loan through SOLO. Once returned, they will be held for you and you will receive a notification when they are ready for collection.
  • Vacation borrowing for most items begins on the Monday of 8th Week. Items will be issued until the Monday of 1st Week of the following term.
  • If you have disclosed a disability, you may be entitled to extended loan periods, higher borrowing limits, or proxy borrowing arrangements.
  • All borrowed items remain your responsibility until they are returned to the library and must not be lent or transferred to others.

Renew and return

  • Loans are renewed automatically, except in certain circumstances outlined below. You may also renew items manually via SOLO.
  • An item will not automatically renew if it has been reserved by another reader. In such cases, you will be notified by email.
  • You may renew items issued under a ‘7 Day Loan’ policy for a maximum total period of 112 days (16 weeks) from the original issue date.
  • Please return items to the same desk from which they were issued.

Lost items

The Law Library does not loan items from its own collections. It facilitates access to material held in offsite storage.

If an offsite item is lost, please report it as soon as possible to library staff or by emailing law.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk, providing details of the author, title, shelfmark (if available), and your contact information.

If the item is not found, a lost item charge will apply. Payment is made via the University’s Online Store, following instructions from the relevant Bodleian team. Once we have received payment, the item will be removed from your library record and any related blocks cleared.
