Keeping Social Scientists Reading : FAQs for SSL Readers

The Bodleian Social Science Library is currently closed to readers. However, we are continuing some services and expanding others while the physical space is inaccessible.

If your question is not answered below, please contact us by email for help.

Our staff will be responding to emails 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

Can I still return books to the Social Science Library?

All books currently on loan have been renewed until 12 October 2020. Ideally, you should keep your books until then and return them when the library re-opens.

For readers who have left or are leaving Oxford, arrangements are being made to make it as easy as possible to return loans.

Temporary Returns Hubs have been set up at various locations across Oxford to accept returns of Bodleian Libraries books, including the Manor Road Building, which is open to accept returns of books from any of the Bodleian Libraries from 12pm-4pm Monday-Friday. See for details.

Items taken from college libraries should be returned directly to the college library.

It is now also possible for readers who are not coming back to Oxford to return items by post.

What services are the Bodleian Libraries offering while the physical libraries are closed?

Click & Collect

It is now possible to borrow physical books from the Social Science Library: place a "Click & Collect" request on SOLO and you will receive an email inviting you to book a specific date and time to collect the requested books.

See for more information.

Scan & Deliver

The Scan & Deliver service has now restarted from some Bodleian Libraries sites, including the Social Science Library. You can place requests for chapter from SSL books using the "LibraryScan" button on SOLO.
