The Bodleian Social Science Library welcomes all taught course students at the University of Oxford. We provide particular support and guidance for students in the Social Sciences Division.

How do I start using the library?

Visit the Library on the ground floor of the Manor Road Building. The library is open in the evening and at weekends: see our opening hours page for full details. For Undergraduates we have a brief library introduction video designed for you, here. There is also a video tailored towards new Postgraduates, here

How do I locate the resources I'm looking for?

Taught courses in the social sciences are structured around the course reading list. See our useful guide on how to understand your reading list and find the resources listed on it.

Use SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online) to search all of Oxford's Libraries for books, journals (both print and electronic) and other resources in any of the libraries in Oxford. Restrict your search to "Social Science Library" to see what is held here in the SSL.

The Bodleian Libraries' guide to SOLO provides more detail on searching and managing your library account.

How can I get access to the resources, either in print or online?

Use our library floor plan (125 kb, pdf) and guide to finding things in the library to navigate your way around our printed collections.

Fully-searchable scanned digital copies of certain key reading list chapters and articles are available on our Weblearn eReadings site. These scans are created and hosted under the terms of the CLA HE Licence.

Where can I read the resources I have found?

The SSL is primarily a lending library and most of our books can be borrowed. All journals and some books are for library use only. Read these in one of our study spaces or photocopy/scan an article or chapter to take home.

The SSL holds multiple copies of all reading list texts, plus an electronic version in many cases. If all the print copies are currently on loan, place a "hold" or reservation for a copy on SOLO.

Beyond the reading list...

For more guidance on finding information sources not on your reading list, visit the LibGuide for your subject.

When searching the catalogue, you may find useful printed resources which are held in the Bodleian Library bookstacks. These can be requested to the SSL by placing a "hold".

Visit some of the other libraries in Oxford to access relevant materials not in the SSL.
