Current guidance for using the Weston Library

Booking a space

We are currently operating a booking system for study spaces to ensure the safety of our staff and readers.

The Weston Library's reading rooms are open to current members of the University of Oxford, and Bodleian Reader card holders who require access to our special collections.

Bodleian Reader card holders

The Weston Library is open to Bodleian Reader card holders. We invite applications from those who can demonstrate that they:

  • Need to consult specific special collections items
  • Need to see those items in order to complete time-critical projects
  • Need to see original items as opposed to digital copies (usually available free of charge through our mediated copying service)

Before booking your study space

Before booking your place in the Weston Library reading rooms, please email with the shelfmarks of the items you would like to see. This will allow us to check whether the items you wish to see are available for consultation.

Items will need to be ordered at least 2 working days prior to your visit. The number of items will be limited to 5 per person.

Once your items are confirmed, you will be asked to book your study space for your preferred day.

Booking guidance

  • The number of spaces is currently very limited, so please only book a study space if you wish to consult special collections items.
  • On-the-day fetching will not be possible, all items will need to be ordered in advance.
  • Pages from open-shelf books in the Weston Library are available for scanning as part of the LibraryScan service.
  • Please consider making use of our free mediated copying service instead of booking a place in the reading rooms, particularly if you intend to visit primarily to photograph special collections items.

Reader admission

  • University and Bodleian Reader card holders may use Weston Library reading rooms and order material to the library.
  • Access to special collections material is not automatically available to all readers. Find out more about how to access special collections material.
