Interlibrary Loans (for External Institutions)

Who can apply?

The Bodleian Social Science Library will accept requests for material from our collections from external institutions:

  • Who hold a British Library account number.
  • Within the UK or overseas.
  • Who confirm that a copyright declaration has been received by the individual for whom the request is being place.

We do not offer interlibrary lending services:

  • In exchange for IFLA vouchers or any other method of payment outside of the British Library scheme.
  • For commercial purposes.

What we will supply

  • Books
  • Individual items which are part of a statistical series
  • Microfilms
  • Discussion and working papers
  • Articles from journal issues

We do not supply the following materials:

  • Key textbooks (these have a status of 'Confined' on the library catalogue)
  • Theses
  • Books from the High Demand Collection material. These contain the phrase 'Issue Desk' after the Call Number on SOLO.
  • Material from the Refugee Studies Grey Literature collection: these contain the phrase 'RSC Boxes' in the shelfmark.
  • Whole journal issues

We charge standard British Library prices. These are as follows:

  • Loans: £15.95
  • Loans (Overseas): £22.35
  • Scans and photocopies: £10.90
  • If a unique item is requested (including: microfilms and items from statistical series) then we will post this by Recorded Delivery and levy the postal cost in addition to the cost of the request.
  • For overseas institutions we will post by Airmail and levy the postal cost in addition to the cost of the request.

How to Request an Item

  • Please ensure that the item you wish to request is available in the Bodleian Social Science Library: you can do this by searching SOLO, the Oxford Libraries' catalogue. Items held within our library will have the Library code "SocSci" and the Location code "SSL Main Lib". Please apply directly to the holding library if an item is not listed as part of the Bodleian Social Science Library collections.
  • Email your request details to including the following information:
    • Title
    • Author
    • Volume and issue number (for periodicals)
    • Shelfmark
    • British Library account number
    • Request reference number
    • The address to which the request is to be sent

The Process

  • We endeavour to despatch requests within two weeks: please do not send a chaser until this time has expired.
  • If we are unable to supply a request we will contact you, usually by email.
  • All items are supplied with a purple slip: this should be kept and returned with any loaned material. For photocopies this may be discarded. The slip confirms the charge we will levy for the request, the due date for loaned material, and provides request details including any specific restrictions applying to the loan.
  • A returns label is also provided for loaned material. Please use this when returning the item to us.

Loan Periods

  • Books are usually loaned for 28 days
  • We may restrict loan periods for unique items, including material from statistical series and microfilms.
  • Renewal requests can be submitted by email to : please note that for certain types of material, such as unique items, we may specify that no renewal is possible.
  • Please return items to us in secure packaging by the specified due date. We will send reminders if items are overdue, and may invoice for items which are not returned or returned in an unsatisfactory condition.
