A new free digital scanning service for our Special Collections whilst the Weston Library reading rooms are closed to readers. Available from 15 July 2020.
Who is eligible to use the service?
It is aimed at Oxford University graduate students and early career researchers, as well as other members of the University.
This is a new service and we have limited resources.
Requests from non-affiliated Bodleian Reader Card holders will be supported where time permits.
How it works
The service will provide digital scans of unrestricted special collections items free of charge.
Contact us about the items you are interested in scanning. We will be able to help you identify specific shelfmarks and folios for scanning, and specialist curatorial help will be on hand if required.
Scans will be provided as PDF files at sufficient resolution for transcription and basic analysis, with simple metadata (shelfmark + folios).
Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis and assessed according to your research needs.
If the material is ineligible for scanning, then we will suggest suitable alternatives if they are available.
At present, special collections material held off-site, including University theses, will not be available for copying. Other items may also be unavailable for legal, conservation or other reasons.
How long will it take?
Orders have an average turnaround time of two weeks but may take longer depending on the material requested.
