Borrowing at the Music Faculty Library

Who can borrow?

  • We offer borrowing privileges to current students and staff of Oxford University, including visiting students and academic visitors to the Music Faculty.
  • You will need your University card to borrow books from this library.
  • Bodleian Reader card holders have reference-only access and cannot borrow items.

What can be borrowed?

  • Most of the Music Faculty Libary’s stock can be borrowed. The main exceptions are most collected editions, expensive facsimile editions and other source material, print journals, LPs and a small number of books designated with a red stripe on the spine as for library use only.
  • SOLO will show whether an item can be borrowed or if it must be consulted in the library.
  • LPs are not available for loan, but there are facilities for using these materials in the library.

Borrowing rules and procedure

  • The maximum number of items you may borrow at a time will depend on your status and is shown below.
  • Books, CDs and music scores may be borrowed for 1 week at a time.
  • Short-loan books and DVDs may be borrowed for 2 days at a time.
  • Exceptionally, you may wish to take a reference book or collected edition to a tutorial. You should ask at the staff desk for this facility and the item may be issued for the duration of the tutorial only.
  • The MFL offers vacation borrowing on books and CDs, and for short-loan items if there is more than one copy of the item available (one copy must remain available in the library)

Renew and return

  • You can usually renew an item if it has not been requested by another reader.
  • You can renew items online via SOLO unless you have reached the limit for online renewals, in which case items should be returned to the library for re-issue.
  • Items should be returned to staff at the library desk or, when the library is closed, using the book returns box at the library entrance. If you are unable to enter the building for any reason, please deposit any returned items which will fit into the mail box at the main faculty entrance.

Lost books

If you have lost a book borrowed from the MFL, please let us know either at the library issue desk or by email (music.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk). We will send you an invoice detailing the replacement cost of the book. You can pay the charge online.
