Borrowing at the Sainsbury Library

Who can borrow?

  • SBS students can borrow from all sections of the library.
  • Other University card holders may borrow books from the Sainsbury Library's Stack and Annexe collections. You will not be able to borrow books that are in high demand.
  • Bodleian Reader card holders have reference-only access to the library; you may not borrow items.

How to borrow

You can borrow books using the self-issue machine on the lower floor, or bring them to the library enquiry desk.

Borrowing allowances and loan periods

Our borrowing policy applies across all Bodleian Libraries that offer lending, including the Sainsbury Library. Find out more about borrowing from the Bodleian Libraries, including how many items you can borrow, loan periods and automatic renewals.

If you have disclosed a disability, you may be eligible for extended loan periods, increased loan limits and proxy borrowing.

Renew and return items

  • All loans, except Same Day Loans, have a maximum renewal period of 112 days (16 weeks) from the date of the original loan.
  • Items you have borrowed will be automatically renewed where possible, usually 1–2 days before the due date. An item reserved by another reader will not be automatically renewed.
  • Sign into SOLO to view the items you have borrowed and when they are due back.
  • To return books you can use the self-issue machine and the book return box on the lower floor, or bring them to the library enquiry desk.

Lost books

If you lose a book you have borrowed, you will be required to pay a lost book charge and for the cost of a replacement.
