I have lost a book that I borrowed from the Library

There is a book that is available in the Library but I can’t find it on the shelves

If you are unable to find a book in the Library that is showing as available on the SOLO library catalogue, please fill in the form below. Please provide the author name, title of the book, shelfmark and your name and email address. Tell us the date when this book will no longer be useful to you. Any additional information may be given in the comments box.

What happens next?

Books lost whilst on loan

As soon as you think you have lost a library book you must report it to a member of library staff. Either report your lost book to a member of staff at the Issue Desk, email: efl-enquiries@bodleian.ox.ac.uk or use the above form.

On receiving notification of your lost book, you will be contacted within 3 working days (Monday to Friday) to confirm that we are dealing with this matter.

Library staff will renew the book you have reported missing for 2 weeks to give you time to look for it and, at the same time, send you an invoice for the cost of the missing book, payable at the end of this two week period.

If at the end of the two weeks you are unable to find your book you should pay the replacement costs in full. Failure to pay the invoice on time will result in you accruing overdue fines on the lost book, until such time that payment has been made. Once the invoice has been settled, the book will be removed from your library account.

You may pay for lost books either by cash or cheque at the Issue Desk, or you can settle your invoice online using a debit or credit card. Please note that there may be a 24-48 hour delay in this charge being removed from your library account if your payment is made outside of weekday library opening hours.

Available books not found in the Library

Library staff will search for the book over the next week. If we find the book, we will place it on hold for you and email you to confirm it is available for you to collect at the issue desk.

If we do not find the book after a week we will email you to let you know. We will continue to search for the book for the next 3 weeks and if it is still not found we will consider purchasing a replacement copy.

How you can help us

The library staff would very much appreciate your help with the increasing problem of missing books.

We are doing our best to ensure that you can easily find the material you need, but you can help us, and yourselves, by:

  • ALWAYS returning books to a member of staff at the Issue Desk
  • WAITING to see that books are checked in, and paying any fines immediately
  • NEVER leaving books you have borrowed at an unattended Issue Desk. If there is no-one at the Desk, either wait for the person on duty to return or knock on the office door behind the Desk
  • NEVER lending your university card or your books to another person
