Hilary Term reading room access

15 January 2021

Given the impact of the pandemic and in order to ensure the continued welfare of our staff and students, the decision has been made to focus our physical library provision on the Old Bodleian Library and Cairns Library. The Sackler Library, Social Science Library and Vere Harmsworth Library reading rooms will be closed to readers from Monday 18 January.

This decision will be reviewed on a regular basis with the intention to reopen the hub libraries as we advance into Hilary Term and also increase the length of opening hours at those sites which are open.

The Old Bodleian Library, will be open 10am–4pm, Mon–Fri for current University members only and spaces will need to be booked in advance. The Cairns Library at the John Radcliffe Hospital will be open, but unstaffed, for clinical students who are onsite for clinical activity between 8am–5pm, Mon–Fri; other students will be refused entry.

We encourage students to make use of our low-contact and zero-contact services wherever possible and to only use the reading rooms if you are unable to access your learning materials remotely, or have difficulties studying at home. If you require access to material which is unavailable, please recommend a resourceRemote services include, but are not limited to:

As you may have read over the Christmas vacation, Michelle Donelan MP Minister of State for Universities, was clear that there must be continued support for students who remained on campus over the Christmas vacation or have been invited back to Oxford. The Bodleian Libraries are proud and committed to supporting our students in their studies by providing access to appropriate study spaces and critical research materials which we see as crucial to good mental health and wellbeing.

For more information regarding COVID-19 safety measures please see the University’s coronavirus advice pages. We request that readers do not visit the physical libraries until they have received their first negative Lateral Flow Device test result, attend individually, wear a face covering (unless exempt) and maintain 2m social distance while within the library.
