Using the Japanese Library

Admission

  • Although the library collection focuses on Japanese Studies, any reader with a valid University card is welcomed and encouraged to use our facilities.
  • The library is open to all University of Oxford students, academic staff, and academic visitors holding a University card or Bodleian Reader card.
  • If you are not a member of the University of Oxford, you will need to apply for a Bodleian Reader card before you can be granted access.
  • You must always carry your library card when using the library and produce it on entry or at any other time if asked to do so.  

Rules and regulations

  • The Bodleian Libraries Regulations and Rules of Conduct apply at this library.
  • You may use your laptop at designated desk spaces in the Reading Room.
  • You may bring small bags into the library.
  • You must not leave your belonging unattended. The Japanese Library assumes no responsibility for any stolen or lost items.
  • Bottled water and hot drinks in KeepCups are permitted, but only on the ground floor.

Layout and classification

  • The library consists of the Main Reading Room and offices on the ground floor, and the bookstacks in the basement.  
  • The main research collection is stored either in the on-site bookstacks or in the remote book storage facility in Swindon. Please always check an item’s location on SOLO.
  • General reference works are arranged by subject in the Main Reading Room. A more extensive selection of reference works can be found in the stacks area.
  • Special collections items are to be consulted in the Weston Library. For access to the Bodleian collection of Japanese rare books and manuscripts, contact bjl@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.
