Data Service: Africa

Key data resources and data collections made available via University of Oxford subscription or open data initiatives.

Africa Information Highway

The African Development Bank (AfDB) statistical data portal provides tools to gather statistical data and indicators relating to African Countries, analyse and export them into multiple formats. You can also visualise Socio-Economic indicators over a period of time, gain access to presentation-ready graphics and perform comprehensive analysis on a country and regional level.

African Centre for Statistics (UNECA)

The Center's long term objective is to serve as a regional service centre for data on economic, social, demographic, and environmental conditions in African countries.

African Economic Outlook

The African Economic Outlook (AEO) presents the current state of economic and social development in Africa and projects the outlook for the coming two years. Climate Change and African Political Stability

The Strauss Center's program analyses how climate change, conflict, governance, and aid intersect to impact African and international security. Researchers have produced a number of new datasets and tools to examine these issues:

Mapping tools

The mapping tool allows users to visualize data on climate change vulnerability, conflict, and aid in Africa. Users can select and map any combination of CCAPS data to assess how myriad climate change impacts and responses intersect.

Climate Vulnerability Model

The CCAPS climate security vulnerability model combines data on physical, socio-economic, demographic, and political insecurities to develop a holistic model of vulnerability, using Geographic Information Systems to locate the confluence of these various sources of vulnerability.

Social Conflict Analysis Database (SCAD)

The newly updated and extended version of SCAD, an events-based dataset on social conflicts from 1990-2015, covers all of Africa and now also Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Each record includes start and end dates, type of event, actors and targets involved, number of participants, number of fatalities, use of government repression, event locations, and issues of contention.

Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED)

ACLED provides near real-time conflict tracking, with georeferenced data disaggregated by type of violence - including battles between armed actors, violence against civilians, and rioting - and by a wide variety of actors - including government forces, rebel groups, militias, and civilians. The dataset includes events from 1997 to 2016, updated weekly.

Malawi Geocoded and Climate Aid Dataset

CCAPS and AidData published a first-of-its-kind geocoded and climate-coded dataset from the Government of Malawi's Aid Management Platform. The dataset includes all types of aid for the 30 donors in Malawi's Aid Management Platform, geocoded and climate-coded to provide a more complete picture of how adaptation fits into development efforts within the country.

World Bank Climate Aid Dataset

This dataset is based on analysis of detailed project documentation for World Bank projects in Sub-Saharan Africa that were approved from 2008 to 2012. Using the CCAPS climate-coding methodology piloted in Malawi, the CCAPS team used a combination of Project Appraisal Documents (PAD), Project Information Documents (PID), and Integrated Safeguards Data Sheet (ISDS) to assign climate scores to all activities in a project.

Sub-National African Education and Infrastructure Access Data

This dataset, compiled by CCAPS, provides data on literacy rates, primary and secondary school attendance rates, access to improved water and sanitation, household access to electricity, and household ownership of radio and television at the subnational level, specifically the first administrative district level. An earlier version of the dataset required users to perform the join in ArcGIS between published shape files and data files. This version includes shape files with the data already joined. For those administrative regions with missing data, this is indicated with a value of -99999. The user must exclude these values before visualizing or analyzing the data.

African Consitutional Design Database

This is a cross-sectional database of constitutional design across all African states, indexed on a scale of integration versus accommodation, as of January 1, 2011.

Emerging Markets Information Service (EMIS)

Delivers company and industry information, financial markets data, and macroeconomic analysis of emerging markets in North Africa (part of MENA) and Sub-Saharan Africa.
