New reader desktop marks enhanced computing services

16 February 2010

Reader-Image_smallThe roll-out of new desktop images for reader computers begins this week and will take approximately six weeks to install in all OULS libraries. The new reader desktop will facilitate greater security for library users as well as provide access to new and up-to-date software and technology. This significant change will ensure OULS conforms to University IT regulations.

When accessing a library computer, readers will need to log on individually with their OLIS patron details (in the same way readers now access OULS wireless and OLIS patron functions). Both University and external readers in possession of a library/University card will be able to log on in this manner. Sessions will time out after a set period of inactivity, protecting reader accounts from use by others.

Readers will also benefit by having continued access to standard programs such as Microsoft Office 2007, a choice of browsers and even new software like Endnote X2, RefWorks Write-n-Cite, Nuance PDF Creator Pro and iTunes. As the computers can now be maintained more easily, readers will always have the newest updates and can start their work with a clean desktop. Reading room SunRays (networked terminals) are not affected and can be used for quick catalogue or database searches.

The changes were successfully trialed in the Bodleian Law Library last December. The implementation has begun already in some libraries and should be completed in most OULS libraries by the end of March. In addition, old computers will be replaced during the roll-out.

Please keep an eye out for signs and seek guidance from library staff if required. More information is available, including a guide outlining the log-on process as well as details of the resources now available on the computers.
