Lord Howe recollected the events which led up to his resignation in November 1990 as Lord President and Deputy Prime Minister in Mrs Thatcher’s government. The seminar was chaired by Professor Martin Ceadel (New College, Oxford).
Lord Howe took the audience through key passages in his resignation speech. His talk was illustrated with images projected from a ‘visualizer’ of the actual document used in the House of Commons. The opening and closing pages of the resignation speech are reproduced here with Lord Howe’s permission.
An audio recording of the seminar has been added to Lord Howe’s papers for researchers to consult. A project to catalogue Lord Howe’s papers is in its final stage; a full description will appear online shortly.
