5 December 2018
Part of the work to the staircase will involve its closure between the Reader Common Room and Lower Reading Room during much of the Christmas Vacation. Additionally, during the week of Monday 17 – Friday 21 December the staircase will not be available as an emergency exit.
On the advice of the University's Fire Officer this means that occupancy of the upper floors (Lower, Duke Humfrey and Upper) will be limited to 100 people in total.
In order to minimise the impact on readers, tours to Duke Humfrey's Library will be suspended and minimum staff numbers maintained above the ground floor.
Readers are kindly asked to consider whether they can work in the Gladstone Link, Radcliffe Camera or other Bodleian Libraries during the week of 17 – 21 December and order material from the Book Storage Facility accordingly.
Please note, security staff will be monitoring occupancy. Please note that when the limit of 100 is reached you will not be able to access Lower, Duke Humfrey or Upper reading rooms until the number falls, even if you were working in the Library earlier in the day. It is therefore essential that you keep all personal belongings with you at all times.
Should you wish to transfer self-collect material to the Radcliffe Camera in advance of the affected week, please speak to staff in the Upper Reading Room by the end of Thursday 13 December. If you are unable to access Old Bodleian reading rooms in the week of 17 – 21 December and require open shelf material please complete an order slip at the Information Desk in the Lower Radcliffe Camera.
To help in monitoring occupancy of the Old Bodleian Library, entry to and exit from the Gladstone Link in the week of 17 – 21 December will be via the Radcliffe Camera only (except in the case of the fire alarm sounding).
If you have any query about this work or require more information please email Reader Services.
The Library apologises for the inconvenience this reduced occupancy may cause.
