ORCID

ORCID – an Open Researchers and Contributor ID – provides you with a persistent digital identifier which you own and control to connect all your research outputs.

Your ORCID is free and unique to you. You can connect it to all your grants, publications, affiliations and more to ensure you get the full credit for your work, even if you change your name or institution.

It also enables you to collate all your academic outputs in one place and makes them easier to share.

Funders and organisations such as HESA, Wellcome and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) either require or recommend the use of ORCID.

The University of Oxford strongly encourages all researchers to sign up for an ORCID.

Registering and affiliating for an ORCID

Register for an ORCID

If you are registering for an ORCID for the first time you need to:

  1. Visit the IT Service ORCID registration page (SSO required)
  2. Select the Log in to ORCID button, which will take you to the ORCID website.
  3. Complete the form – including setting your ORCID password - and select Authorize. This will return you to the IT Services Self Registration form.

You have now successfully created your ORCID and linked and affiliated it with your Oxford account.

If you select ‘return home’ you can see your ORCID number and an option to 'View your ORCID profile'. Selecting this will return you to the ORCID website.

Here you need to sign in with your ORCID password if you wish to add information, such as publications.

Affiliate your pre-existing ORCID to your Oxford account

Complete these steps if you already have an ORCID which you set up at another institution or which you set up at Oxford but didn’t affiliate with your Oxford account.

  1. Log in to your ORCID account via the ORCID website and delete any manually entered Employment.
  2. Visit the IT Service ORCID registration page (SSO required)
  3. Select the Log in to ORCID button, which will take you to the ORCID website.
  4. Sign in to your ORCID again with your email and password
  5. Click 'Authorize' to link your ORCID to your Oxford account and to add ‘The University of Oxford’ as your verified affiliation to your record.

You have now successfully affiliated your existing ORCID profile with your Oxford account.

Connect your ORCID in Symplectic Elements for easy admin

Remember to connect your ORCID in Symplectic Elements. This helps the University identify many of your publications automatically and reduce your admin load later.

It only takes a few minutes.

Follow the instructions on OxIntranet (SSO required)

Using your ORCID profile

To use your ORCID profile – directly log in to the ORCID website.

You can choose to do this using the ORCID password you have created, or by logging in with your SSO credentials by choosing the ‘Sign in through your institution’ option.

You can display your ORCID profile:

Leaving Oxford

If you are leaving Oxford, you will need to remove the affiliation. You can do this in two ways:

  • Follow the details on the IT Service ORCID registration page (SSO required) to unlink your ORCID
  • If your SSO has lapsed, you can manually delete the Oxford affiliation directly on your ORCID profile
