Revised claim process for COAF open access fees June 2020

Oxford’s block grant from the Charity Open Access Fund (COAF) for the year Oct 2019-Sep 2020 has now been fully spent.

This prompts a change of procedure for the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs) for research funded by five of the COAF partners: Blood Cancer UK, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Parkinson’s UK and Versus Arthritis.

From now on these researchers should, until further notice: contact their individual charity direct regarding payment of Article Processing Charges (and whether to take the paid ‘gold open access’ route), instead of applying to our block grant. This may require obtaining and paying the invoice themselves and then sending the claim to the funder for reimbursement. Contact details are below.

There is no need to fill in Oxford’s block grant application form as unfortunately the Bodleian’s APC Team is unable to process these payments centrally on behalf of researchers. We will keep you informed about any changes to this revised workflow after the end of the current COAF grant year on 30 September 2020.

The Wellcome Trust block grant has also been spent, but we have applied for an additional allocation. This means that Wellcome-funded authors should continue with the usual procedure whereby the Bodleian’s APC Team handle invoicing and payment.

The latest procedures are outlined on our Wellcome Trust and COAF page at http://openaccess.ox.ac.uk/wellcome-and-coaf.

Medical Research Council researchers

This does not affect holders of MRC or other Research Council grants, who can continue to apply to our separate RCUK Block Grant which still has funds available for RCUK-funded articles in eligible journals.

If you have any questions please contact our OA Team on openaccess@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.
