Hello, my name is Kat Steiner, and I’m here to tell you about the NOC Library.

Its official name is the Girdlestone Memorial Library, but we mostly call it the NOC.

The NOC is one of four Bodleian Health Care Libraries – depending on where you’re based, you may want to visit some of the others, which are the Cairns Library in the John Radcliffe Hospital, the Knowledge Centre on the Old Road Campus, and the Horton Library in Banbury.

The NOC is a small, friendly library with plenty of study space and computers for you to use. All staff and students at the University of Oxford are welcome to use the library, as well as NHS staff and Oxford Brookes Faculty of Health and Life Sciences staff and students.

I’m going to show you a few photos to help you get a feel for it.

If you work at the NOC and have a fob, you can use this library 24 hours a day. Otherwise, you can see our opening hours on our website.

You can find the library on the first floor of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre – come in via the main entrance, go up the big staircase on your left and then follow the corridor around to your right. There are signs to guide you!

As you can see when you come in, there is plenty of seating depending on how you’d like to work. We have individual study carrels, larger desks for you to spread out, computers for you to use, and a few height adjustable desks where you can stand or sit. Drinks and cold food or snacks are allowed in the library.

Here you can also see some of our books and journals. You can search for them via SOLO, the library catalogue, and you can borrow books during staffed hours. We also get deliveries of books from our offsite storage - you can order these via SOLO and consult them in the library during staffed hours.

We have a mixture of NHS and University PCs available for you to use and a photocopier, printing and scanning machine. We also have our Group Study Room, which you can book with staff or via our online form.

However, the library isn’t just about the physical space! We have friendly staff who sit at these desks available to help you.

I’m the NOC librarian and I offer tutorials on finding articles, doing a literature review and managing your references. You can email me at any time or pop into the NOC to see me in person.

If you have any questions, you can follow these links for more information and help. Don’t be afraid to ask!
