Haskell Collection

The Haskell Collection consists of materials collected by Professor Francis Haskell in the field of French 18th-19th century Salon criticism. It is divided mostly between the Haskell Room and the Rare Books Room.

Wind Room

Materials housed in the Wind Room are titles primarily (with some exceptions) published 1500 – 1900. Their subject focus is, mostly, the survival of the classical tradition in Western culture, including Humanist Studies and iconography and iconology. Some publications on later artistic periods are also housed in this room.  

Post-1900 publications are now on the Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library's open shelves or housed offsite.

Archive Room

Archival material held in the Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library (formerly the Sackler Library) includes the following collections:

The Archive Room also contains some other collections on extended loan from the Taylor Institution Library, including the WJ Strachan Collection of Livres d’Artiste.

Access to special collections

If you are not a registered reader and you wish to consult specific items, please apply by email (artlib-enquiries@bodleian.ox.ac.uk), stating your identity, home institution, purpose of study and the item(s) you wish to consult. For access to the library, you will also need to apply for a Bodleian Reader card.

Special collections materials are held in the Archive Room, Haskell Room, Rare Books Room and Wind Room and are closed access. To request items, please apply in person at the help desk or by email, providing full bibliographic details and the shelfmark (call number). We advise that you give at least 24 hours' notice.  

Requested items must be read at the designated desk in the entrance area.
