We are part of the Special Collections Department at the Bodleian Libraries and comprise a staff of 23, encompassing trained conservators, technicians and administrative staff.
We have seven PACR-accredited conservators and are organised into three main teams: Book, Paper and Preventive Conservation. The teams are supported in their work by administrative staff, who assist with facilitating tours, training and the day-to-day running of the department.
We benefit from outstanding curatorial advice from our colleagues in Special Collections, with whom we work closely in order to determine the priorities of the collections. We are an academic-related section and participate in research, whilst continuing to develop the experience of our team through specialist training and external collaborations. Our work consists of a combination of complex, longer projects and smaller practical treatments, which are part of our ongoing preservation programmes. We also provide a number of essential Preventive Conservation measures, and our staff are actively involved in the Exhibitions and Loans programmes of the Bodleian.
The Library has been at the forefront of Conservation training since the infancy of the profession and we continue to share our expertise through teaching, both internally and externally, as well as contributing to the conservation profession through active involvement in the UK Institute of Conservation (Icon).
