The Bodleian Libraries extends sincere condoldences to the family and loved ones of the renowned Brtish playwright Sir Tom Stoppard, who died aged 88 at the weekend.
Sir Tom has been described as being the 'backbone of British Theatre', and he famously won an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for his screenplay Shakespeare in Love.
As one of the greatest playwrights and screenwriters of modern times, with a career spanning more than 60 years, Sir Tom was awarded the Bodley Medal in 2004, for his exceptional contribution to the dramatic arts. His most celebrated plays include Travesties, The Invention of Love and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which includes the poignant and in this case, very apt, line: 'Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else'."
Richard Ovenden, Bodley’s Librarian and the Helen Hamlyn Director of the University Libraries, said:
Sir Tom Stoppard was one of the giants of literature and a great friend to the Bodleian. The world is significantly diminished by his passing.
