The Chinese Studies Library (CSL) will be moving from their current location on Walton Street to the new Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre within the grounds of St Hugh’s College in July 2014. The Library’s name will also change to the Bodleian KB Chen China Centre Library when it reopens.
The Library’s new name is in recognition of the generous gift from Hong Kong businessman, Mr Henry Chan, towards St Hugh’s College’s £21 million fundraising target for the Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre. The Library will be named after Mr Chan’s late father, Mr KB Chen.
The new Library will house 45,000 volumes of the world-renowned Bodleian Libraries’ collection of Chinese books and will form the academic heart of the building. Oxford University’s relationship with China dates back to 1604 when the first Chinese book was received in the newly opened Bodleian Library.
The last day of opening for the Chinese Studies Library at the Walton Street site will be Friday 4 July 2014. Lockers in the CSL will need to be emptied by 13 June 2014. The planned first day of opening for the new Bodleian KB Chen China Centre Library is Monday 4 August 2014. Access to the Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre will be from Canterbury Road.
The Library’s collections will be unavailable during the move (5 July – 3 August 2014). Readers needing to borrow books during this period must do so before Friday 4 July 2014. Online self-renewals will remain available throughout the move.
The last day for requesting Bodleian Libraries books to be read in the CSL will be 20 June 2014. Between 7 July and 1 August 2014 CSL books should be returned to the Oriental Institute Library.
