BUNAC archive comes to the Bodleian Libraries

16 August 2013

Following a campaign by the Times Higher Education to find it a home, the archive of the British Universities North America Club (BUNAC) has come to the Bodleian Libraries.

Founded in 1962 as a way of to provide students in the UK and North America the opportunity to work overseas, the club became one of the most well-known student exchange programmes and promoted international understanding between the UK, USA and Canada. The Club also developed programmes in Australasia, Africa and the Far East.

The Club’s archives consist of material from the founding of the Club in the early 1960s through to the demise of the Club in 2013. The material consists of promotional items such as member newsletters, videos, posters and brochures as well as organisational material such as minutes. These documents trace the ‘highs and lows’ of the Club’s operation, such as the threat of NUS Travel, the collapse of Courtline, the death of the first General Secretary, and the foreign student employment policy changes of both the US and Canadian Governments.
