These games and toys are received by legal deposit. The original John Johnson Collection contains historic games, many of which have been catalogued and digitised. Work is in progress in cataloguing the card games, both from the original John Johnson Collection, and from the Mary Gardiner Collection (donated 2002) which includes a specialised Happy Families collection. The earliest playing cards are in the Douce Collection.
In 2012 we received a major donation of Board and other games from Richard Ballam. The Ballam collection is also currently being catalogued.
Please contact the Librarian of the John Johnson Collection for further information.
From the late 1970s onwards, bookjackets from Bodleian Library books (including the dependent libraries: RSL, Rhodes House, Law Library, Indian Institute etc) have been taken from books and sorted into English Language, Foreign Language, Oxford Publishers and Publishers relating to the Ryder Collection (Jonathan Cape, Chatto & Windus, Putnam, Hogarth, Virago). They are not easy to locate as the date associated with them is that of packaging them for the shelves. There are minimal records for the book jacket parcels on SOLO (search syntax ICPbookjacket). Please contact the Librarian of the John Johnson Collection for further information.
