IT at the EFL

Accessing the University network from the library

At the EFL we have nine public access PCs from which you can access resources such as SOLO, OxLIP+ and Oxam.

Four of these terminals are dedicated to accessing SOLO so you always have easy access to the online catalogue. Please note that these are for the use of library users wishing to access online resources provided or subscribed to by the University.

Logging on to Reader PCs in the library
Reader PCs in the Library require readers to log on individually using their Library card login and password. This ensures that the Bodleian Libraries conform to University IT regulations.

Usingthese PCs readers have access to updated software (IE7, MS Office 2007), a choice of browsers and new software (iTunes etc).

Information on how to reset your library password is available online or as download (PDF).

Using your laptop in the library

We permit the use of laptops in the library and wireless access is available. Please note that laptops may be used on the three designated tables on the main floor of the library, but not elsewhere.

In order to access the network from your laptop the simplest and most straightforward route is via wireless access.

Wireless access

In order to take advantage of our wireless access facility, you need to access the Bodleian-Libraries network. A brief guide to wireless access in the library is available to download in PDF format.

Further details about wireless access in the Bodleian Libraries is available on the Libraries' website.

Accessing e-resources for English from outside the Oxford network

The following information is taken from the Computing Services webpage: http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/services/computing

Oxford University Single Sign-On

For members of the University, an Oxford University Single Sign-On (SSO) is necessary to access some resources within the University. However it is essential if you want to access certain electronic resources from outside the University. Details of the databases requiring an Oxford SSO account can be found from the electronic resources FAQs.

You need to register for an Oxford SSO account before you leave Oxford as the application has to come from within the University domain, i.e. ox.ac.uk. You can self-register to get an Oxford SSO account. Make sure that you have your University Card number available as you will need it during the registration process. Go to Oxford SSO to find out how to set up an SSO account. The page to which this link points contains a link to the actual self-registration form.

External users are not eligible to access databases requiring Oxford SSO authorisation from outside the University. However, access to some of these resources from within the University may be possible. Please ask at individual libraries for guidance.

There are further details about the Oxford SSO, including how to apply for and how to activate the account.

Further information about accessing eresources from outside the University network can be found at: http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/eresources/remote_access

Information for external readers using Oxford University Libraries

Direct, off-campus access to all electronic resources is not available to those holding library cards (rather than blue-stripe University cards). See Admissions for information about entitlement.

External readers are entitled to walk-in, i.e. on-campus, use only by the terms of our subscriptions to most electronic resources.  However, a few resources (principally in law and business) are further restricted by log-in to current University members even on campus.  Readers who have affiliations to other academic institutions may be able to obtain off-campus access to their home subscription resources remotely by arrangement with their home institution.
