The Map Room is part of Special Collections and has one of the ten largest collection of maps in world. More than one million sheet maps and 20,000 atlases are available to readers. The collections include early examples of cartography, such as the fourteenth century Gough Map, portolan charts, estate maps and many atlases. The Bodleian Library is entitled to claim a free copy of any map published in Britain within one year of publication. It has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ordnance Survey maps in existence. Topographic and thematic mapping at a range of scales is available for most countries of the world.

Finding maps

The bulk of the Bodleian’s collection – including its maps – is stored off-site. Items must be retrieved by request. Most orders are available by the next day for consultation in the Map Room.

Reproducing Maps

Map Room staff are pleased to provide guidance on reproducing maps in the Bodleian's collection.

Making maps

We provide teaching and technical support in digital map-making, using geographic information systems (GIS). This includes individual consultations as well as hands-on taught courses.

About

The Map Room has temporarily moved to Duke Humfrey’s Library, in the Old Bodleian Building. Any Bodleian reader may access the room and request map material.

Collections

In addition to the large paper map collection, the Map Room provides access to a range of digital map data.
