WISER Workshops in Trinity Term 2012

All members of the University and Bodleian Library Readers may attend WISER workshops. Some individual workshops are designed for particular groups (for example researchers or postgraduates). Check the individual class descriptions for more details.

Bodleian Libraries will be running the following workshops in Weeks 4 & 5.

ARTstor and Bridgeman: Using images in teaching and learning [Tueday 15 May 14:00-16:00]
The course examines two major digital image collections subscribed to by the University - ARTstor and Bridgeman Education - geared to research and teaching in the humanities, history of science and medicine, and social sciences. Viewing, presenting and managing images are also covered. Presenters: Clare Hills-Nova and Vicky Brown.

WISER: Getting information to come to you [Wednesday 16 May 14.00 - 15.30]
This session will show you how to set up alerts to journals, databases and websites, so that you receive notifications when new content is added. Participants will have the opportunity to set up RSS feed readers and/or email notifications during the session. Presenters: Jane Rawson and Penny Schenk

WISER: Manuscripts [Wednesday 16 May 15.30 - 17.00]
This session will give an introductory overview of the rich heritage collections preserved in the Bodleian. This session will also help readers to locate relevant material and describe the procedures for access and getting assistance. Presenters: Mike Webb

RefWorks for Sciences and Social Sciences [Friday 18 May 14.00 - 17.00]
RefWorks is an online tool which allows you to manage your references, insert them into your work, automatically generate bibliographies and easily switch between citation styles. This introduction is open to all but the section on importing references will focus on Science/Social Science examples. Presenters: Kate Williams and Nia Roberts

WISER: Information Sources for African Studies [Monday 21 May 09.15 - 10.45] This session will cover finding tools for locating African Studies materials, key portals and gateways for African Studies and online archives of primary texts. Starting with a presentation the session will also include time for participants to try out some of the resources demonstrated. Presenters: Sarah Rhodes and Lucy McCann.

WISER: Electronic Enlightenment - Letters & Lives Online [Monday 21 May 10.45 - 12.15]
This new workshop introduces EE's full-text collection of early 17th to mid-19th century correspondence. An extraordinary social network covering topics from religious tolerance to animal rights, from vulcanology to classical archaeology, and from economic modelling to celebrity culture. Presenters: Dr Robert McNamee & Mark Rogerson.

Digital.Humanities@Oxford Summer School 2012

The Digital.Humanities@Oxford Summer School (DHOXSS) 2012 is scheduled for the first week of July!

Digital Humanities LogoFrom the 2nd – 6th of July 2012 DHOXSS delegates visiting the University of Oxford, UK, will be introduced to a range of topics suitable for researchers, project managers, research assistants, and students who are interested in the creation, management, or publication of digital data in the humanities.

Delegates will follow one of our 5 day workshops on:

  •   An Introduction to XML and the Text Encoding Initiative
  •   Working with TEI Texts (Advanced)
  •   An Introduction to Digital Humanities Tools and Approaches
  •   A Humanities Web of Data: Publishing, Linking, Querying and Visualisation on the Semantic Web

Each day will also contain plenary guest lectures by experts in their fields, plus a number of sessions on a wide variety of Digital Humanities topics. There will  be morning surgery sessions to discuss projects and possibilities with tutors. The summer school is a collaboration for Digital.Humanities@Oxford between Oxford University Computing Services (OUCS), Oxford e-Research Centre (OERC), with the assistance of the Humanities Division, the Bodleian Library, the Oxford Internet Institute, and e-Research South.

The Summer School will be located at Merton College, OUCS, and the OeRC, all of which situated in the centre of the city of Oxford, UK.
