Building Works Update: Underground Bookstore and Old Bodleian Library Access Project

7 December 2010

As part of this project, please note the following changes relating to Library facilities and services:

  • The North staircase in the Old Bodleian Library is closed until c. June 2011(although it is available for use in the event of an emergency evacuation).
  • Temporary toilets have been provided in the Old Bodleian Library. These are located adjacent to the Divinity School and accessible via a covered walkway from the Proscholium. Temporary coat and bag storage facilities are also provided here.
  • Work to raise the level of the Old Schools Quadrangle will begin in December and last until c. April 2011. From 20 December the middle section of the Quadrangle will be cordoned off and a walkway provided around the perimeter of the Quadrangle: other sections of the Quadrangle will be cordoned off in turn. All doorways with the exception of the Great Gate will be accessible and signage provided to direct readers and visitors. It is intended to undertake the most noisy work over the Christmas vacation as far as possible.
  • A hoist has been provided in an enclosed area in front of the Radcliffe Camera to facilitate book moves and construction work.
Noise levels will be kept to a minimum as construction work is undertaken but it is inevitable that reading rooms in both the Old Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera will be affected. Thank you for your patience as we move ahead with this exciting project.
