2 December 2008
The Bodleian Library will open its doors to the public for a special one-day event on Thursday, 4 December to mark the Christmas celebrations. The event includes the display of three illuminated manuscripts from the 13th-15th centuries, free admissions to the Divinity School and special offers throughout the Library's Gift Shop.
The manuscripts on display are:
- Dancing on the battlements from The Romance of Alexander in French verse, Flemish AD 1338-44;
- Singing at the lectern from a Latin Breviary, Italian, later 15th century;
- Feasting in the cold of winter from a detached Flemish calendar, probably from a Liege Psalter, third quarter of the 13th century.
These illustrations were carefully selected for the Bodleian's exclusive 2008 Christmas card range. The ever popular Bodleian Christmas cards brochure includes a selection of 10 new cards, all sourced from the Bodleian's collections. They are available for sale in the Library's Gift Shop or online at www.shop.bodley.ox.ac.uk
The display will be available in the Divinity School which offers free admission to this site for all the visitors for the entire day. Also, the Bodleian Library Gift Shop offers 10% discount on purchases of our unique ranges of Christmas Cards and Gifts for this one day only.
The exhibition will be open on Thursday, 4 December from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm and the Gift Shop will have extended opening hours from 9 am to 7 pm.
