East European Collections

Taylor Bodleian Slavonic & Modern Greek Library

The East European collections (ca 120,000 volumes) are housed in the Taylor Bodleian Slavonic & Modern Greek Library (or TABS) at 47 Wellington Square.

The library specialises in the languages, literature, history and culture of Eastern Europe.

Research collections

Much of the research collection in languages and literatures is on open access and is available for loan to registered readers. There is a small open shelf reference collection on the history of the region, but the majority of the non-literary stock is housed in the Bodleian bookstack and may be requested online by placing a Hold (Stack Request) on SOLO. There are daily deliveries from the Bodleian and from Nuneham Courtenay Repository to TABS.

Teaching collections

There is a separate teaching collection of around 8,000 volumes at TABS, primarily for the use of undergraduates studying Russian language and literature at the University. Students of other East European languages and literatures may also access material in the research collections.

Special collections

Special collections conserved in the basement at TABS include the library of W.R. Morfill (1834-1909), the first Oxford Professor of Russian, who was a philologist and literary historian, and also that of the first Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek, R.M. Dawkins (1871-1955), which includes many pre-1800 publications, and early 20th-century items of considerable research significance.
