This is the highest level of accreditation for libraries serving the NHS which recognises significant evidence of excellence and innovation.

The Helicon assessors particularly commended the proactive approach taken by the Health Care Libraries’ staff to support NHS requirements for workplace knowledge access and widened access to learning.  Other aspects of the service including the high quality of the physical libraries and IT provision were also praised.

HCL provides library and information services to the researchers, academics and students of the University’s Medical Sciences Division as well as to all NHS staff working within the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust and the Oxfordshire Primary care Trust.

The wide range of services includes teaching and collections to support patient care, managerial policy and decision-making, medical research and lifelong learning as well as innovative outreach services providing information support directly to clinical staff on the wards and in clinical departments.

Donald Mackay, Head of Health Care Libraries, said ‘We are very encouraged to receive this level of accreditation.  We have been providing library services to the University and the NHS for over forty years and have always aimed to deliver a high quality and innovative service.  We are very pleased that this award recognises the hard work of HCL staff as well as the high quality and wide range of services that we provide to healthcare staff, students and researchers here in Oxford.’

The Health Care Libraries comprise two libraries in Oxford - the Cairns Library in the John Radcliffe Hospital and the new Knowledge Centre at the Old Road Campus beside the Churchill Hospital. For more information visit www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/hcl
