PD James speaks about crime writing to library supporters

6 September 2007

bodleys_circleNearly 100 guests attended the Bodley’s Circle day at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, on Thursday, 6 September, an annual event honouring potential benefactors of the Library.

Hosted by Bodley’s Librarian, Dr. Sarah Thomas, the day event included a lunch in the unique environment of the Divinity School, a guided tour of the summer exhibition, Italy’s Three Crowns: Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio and a harp and flute recital in the Convocation House.

This year’s special guest speaker was Baroness James of Holland Park OBE (or as she is known to millions of her readers, PD James) who was awarded the Bodley Medal in October 2002. She introduced the audience to The Craft of the English Detective Story.

Dr. Sarah Thomas, Bodley’s Librarian also gave an address in which she highlighted several ongoing projects within the Bodleian and the continued need for benefaction.

Guests had the opportunity to assist in some work demonstrations by the Library’s outstanding team of conservators. They were shown conservation work on ‘ordinary’ Ordnance Survey and other interesting and unique maps from the Bodleian Library’s unique Map Collection. Some of the Library’s current projects which include the recently-acquired Tudor Sheldon tapestry map were also presented.

Bodley’s Circle was established in 2003 as a means of thanking those who have decided to leave a legacy to the Bodleian Library. The generosity of former friends and supporters has enabled the Library to enrich its collections. One such extraordinary acquisition is The Book of Curiosities of the Sciences, and Marvels for the Eyes, an Arabic cosmographic manuscript from the 11th century.
