Refurbishment Works - Cairns Library and Knowledge Centre

Cairns Library Refurbishment Update November 2012

The Cairns will be closed for one night from 7pm on Monday 5 November until 8.30am on Tuesday 6 November to finish laying the new carpet.

We apologise for the inconvenience this closure may cause.

Cairns Library Refurbishment Update 16th October 2012

The Cairns has now been re-opened and is once again accessible 24/7.

Our new book collection is now finished and is fully up and running.

There will still be some noise and disruption on Thursday and Friday this week as we take down the temporary book collection.

Next week we will finish laying the new carpet tiles, which means we will be forced to close the library for at least one night (most probably Wednesday 24th October).

Over the next two or three weeks we will also be installing new shelving and some new quiet study desks and study carrels.

Many apologies for any inconvenience.  This was all originally planned for July but has been delayed due to unexpected complications with our electrical boards.

Cairns Library Now Closed Until Thursday 4th October for Essential Electrical Works

Updated: Friday 28 September 2012

Unfortunately, due to circumstances entirely beyond our control, essential electrical works in the Cairns Library that were planned for early August will now be taking place from 3pm on Friday 28th September to 9am on Thursday 4th October.

Unfortunately health and safety regulations and insurance issues require us to close the library while the works are taking place.

We apologise for the extremely short notice of these closures - we only received confirmation of these today.

We do very much understand the disruption that this will cause, but unfortunately our electrical boards are now almost 40 years old and have reached the end of their operational life.

We will organise a book fetching service so that library members can still borrow books from 9am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week and we will reopen earlier than Thursday if we are told that it is safe to do so. Please keep an eye on our Webpages for updates. The Knowledge Centre on the Old Road Campus/Churchill site will be open as normal.

We apologise for the inconvenience that these closures will cause.

Library Closures

Unfortunately, due to circumstances entirely beyond our control, essential electrical works in the Cairns that were planned for early August had to be delayed and will now be taking place over the next week.

The situation is constantly changing and final dates have yet to be confirmed by University and OUH Estates for some of the works but we now anticipate that the electrical works will be done in three phases.  Unfortunately health and safety regulations and insurance issues require us to close the close library to readers while the works are taking place.

CONFIRMED CLOSURE DATES:   Overnight from 17.30 to 08.30 Wednesday 26th and overnight from 17.30 to 08.30 Thursday 27th September.

ANTICIPATED CLOSURE DATES (TBC) :  All day and overnight Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September.

ANTICIPATED CLOSURE DATES (TBC) :  All day and overnight Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd October

We do very much appreciate the disruption that this will cause, but unfortunately our electrical boards are now almost 40 years old and have reached the end of their operational life.

If we are allowed to let our staff into the space then we will organise a book fetching service so that library members can still borrow books from 9am to 5pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.  The Knowledge Centre on the Old Road Campus/Churchill will be open as normal.

We are very unhappy that we are in this situation as we had planned specifically for all of these works to take place over the early part of the summer vacation to minimise disruption and we apologise for the inconvenience that these closures will cause.

If the closure dates change we’ll of course update these Webpages immediately.

Library Refurbishment Update: August 2012

The current works at the Cairns and the Knowledge Centre are being undertaken to improve our current collection areas, study spaces and IT facilities and to free up space for use by colleagues in the MSD.

The works at the Cairns include a new book collection, better study tables, extra IT facilities, and a general improvement in the look and feel of the Cairns including a new carpet.

The planned completion date for all of the works was originally the end of August.

Unfortunately, due to unexpected issues with our electrical boards, there will be a delay of at least 4 weeks before the refurbishment will be completed at the Cairns Library.
We do not expect the works to be completed until the end of September.

We will continue to provide our full range of services whilst the works are going on.  However, there is likely to be one weekend (date to be confirmed) when the Cairns will have to be closed to allow electrical works to take place and at least one evening (most probably during the week of September 10th) when the library will be closed overnight to allow a new carpet to be laid.

Our apologies for any inconvenience.

The Knowledge Centre works are progressing to timetable and we expect the works to be completed by the 10th of September.

Please do contact me if you have questions, concerns or comments about the works or about our space generally and of course I’m always happy to talk to all members of the Trust or Division about the many other services (outreach, training, electronic, etc.) that we provide.

Cairns Library, John Radcliffe

Work is under way to create office space for the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences and a new book collection and improved study and IT spaces in the Cairns Library.

A temporary book collection will be built to allow access to our book stock during the works but there may be one or two days (dates to be confirmed) when our book stock will be temporarily inaccessible.  There will be increased noise in the library as a result of the works but extra quiet study spaces will be made available in the Beeson Training Room at the far back of the Cairns.

The Beeson Training Room will therefore not be available for library or departmental training or teaching sessions over the summer.  However, the Cairns Library Group Study Room will continue to be available and our staff are always happy to deliver training sessions in departmental and other locations across the JR or Churchill.

A full range of IT facilities - medical student, NHSNet and Bodleian networked PCs and associated printing and scanning – will be available in the Cairns throughout all of the period.

Please contact Donald Mackay or Jo Gardner at the Cairns Library if you have any queries or concerns about the above.  They can be contacted on 01865 221936 or hcl-enquiries@bodleian.ox.ac.uk (subject line - “Cairns Refurbishment”).

Planned New Layout of Cairns Library

Cairns-Layout

Knowledge Centre, Old Road Campus

The Knowledge Centre’s current book room and half of the quiet study area will become office space for NDS.  The other half of the present quiet study area will be merged with the current group study room to create a new book and quiet study area.  The current computer room will be converted into a new group study room and the PCs will be moved into the KC entrance area and atrium space.

Lower use books and journals will be moved off site for the duration of the works.  However, we will keep copies of heavily borrowed items on site during the works and will extend loan periods to cover the entire period of the works.  All books made inaccessible by the works will be marked as such on our catalogue.  Please contact the Knowledge Centre directly if you need a book that we have had to move offsite during this period.  Our staff will then try to arrange access for you to an alternative copy (this may be print or electronic).

There will be increased noise and a temporary loss of our main study spaces in the KC as a result of the works.  However, alternative study facilities will be made available.

All of our University and NHSNet PCs and associated printing and scanning facilities will continue to be available at the KC throughout all of the period.

Please contact Eli Bastin, the Knowledge Centre Manager, in the first instance if you have any queries or concerns about the above.  Eli can be contacted on 01865 289383 or eli.bastin@bodleian.ox.ac.uk
