Installing and using the VPN

What is the VPN? - The VPN is software that you can use as an alternative to Oxlip+ to access legal databases and Oxford only web pages such as OXAM.  Most people find it easier to use Oxlip+ , and that is the recommended route to access subscribed databases when outside the university network.  However, if you would still like to install VPN then see the information below or go to the pages at OUCS.

What do I need ?

  1. You need install the VPN software on your computer (instructions below)
  2. You need a remote access username and password.
You can get both from the OUCS registration web site.

Will the VPN work on my computer?- the VPN works on Windows, Apple Mac and Linux computers. However, you will not be able to use it if you do not have administrative rights to your computer for example if you are using a work place computer, internet cafe or computer room at another University or public library. .

Can someone install the VPN for me and show me how to use it? Yes - please book an appointment by e-mailing law.library@bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Can I install the VPN myself? Yes, there are instructions on the OUCS web pages. (Alternatively download a guide with screen shots in PDF format.) There are different instructions for different devices

Now you've installed the VPN you'll need to run it every time you use a database that requires the VPN.

    1. Double click on the VPN client in your program files. To find it on a Windows computer choose START | PROGRAM FILES | CISCO SYSTEMS VPN CLIENT | VPN CLIENT.
    2. This will open a dialogue box. "Click Connect"
    3. You will now be prompted for your "Remote Access username and password".
    4. Once you have entered your username and password correctly the dialogue box will diappear from your screen. On a Windows computer you will see a little yellow padlock icon next to the clock. You are now connected to the Oxford network.
    5. Open your web browser and connect to Lexis, Westlaw or other databases as usual (e.g. by following links from the Law Library's list of legal databases or from Oxlip).
