World Book Day
World Book Day: Tolkien at the EFL
4th March 2010
In connection with the exhibition of Tolkien’s original artwork for The Hobbit in the Divinity School, Old Bodleian Library, the EFL is displaying a small selection of items from Tolkien’s Celtic Library, donated to the English Faculty on his retirement in 1959. As well as The Text of the Mabinogion: and other Welsh tales from the Red Book of Hergest (1887), edited by John Rhys, who was then Professor of Celtic at Oxford, the display includes editions of Icelandic sagas and Old English texts, invoices, photographs and correspondence.
The EFL also houses the bust of Tolkien by his daughter-in-law, Faith Tolkien, bronzed and presented to the Faculty in 1966.
