What we offer
We can provide the picture perfect setting for civil wedding and civil partnership ceremonies or drinks receptions, dinners, and family celebrations. Our rooms offer a magnificent setting for business presentations and corporate hospitality. We have for hire three rooms of different sizes, each with its own unique history and character. Our beautiful quadrangles provide secluded outdoor spaces, surrounded by some of Oxford’s most ancient and iconic buildings. You may even extend the hospitality spaces by means of a marquee.
Our experienced team will help you to plan your event. They can advise on caterers and other suppliers, ensuring that your function goes smoothly.
In addition to the hire of our rooms, we can offer some unique experiences to make your function truly unforgettable:
- Guided tours of the Library’s oldest reading room, Duke Humfrey’s Library.
- We can arrange to open our exhibition room, where you can see treasures from the Library’s collections.
Both of the above offers are subject to availability and attract an additional fee.
About the Library
One of the great libraries of the world, the Bodleian is a working library which forms part of the University of Oxford. First opened to scholars in 1602, it incorporates an earlier library erected by the University in the fifteenth century to house books donated by Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester. As the largest university library in the UK, and one of five legal deposit libraries, the Library holds millions of printed items as well as manuscripts.
In its reading rooms, generations of famous scholars have studied through the ages, among them five kings, 40 Nobel Prize winners, 26 prime ministers and writers including Oscar Wilde, CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien.
All three of our rooms for hire have level or ramped access, but please be aware that there are 4 steps up and 3 steps down, between the Divinity School and Convocation House. A guest in a wheelchair wishing to move between these two rooms would need to take the outdoor route.
We have a toilet for disabled users. There are five on-street disabled parking spaces near the Bodleian Library: one (1) in front of Exeter College; two (2) outside Blackwell’s Bookshop on Broad Street and two (2) on South Parks Road, near the King's Arms pub.
Please refer to the Oxford Information Centre (01865 726871 or http://www.visitoxford.org/) for more information on disabled parking spaces and procedures.
We are licensed for music, dancing and the service of alcohol from 8.00 to midnight every day.
All three of our rooms are licensed for civil weddings and civil partnerships.
Caterers, Furniture Hire and other Suppliers
Your hire fee gives you exclusive use of the specific rooms you have hired. We are a working library, open to readers seven days a week, so at most times the Quadrangle, the Proscholium and the toilets will be open to readers during your hire period. However, on Saturday and Sunday after 17.00 you will have exclusive use of these spaces as well as the rooms you have hired.
The client arranges his or her own suppliers selected from a recommended list, including caterers, furniture hire, florists and musicians. This gives you the freedom to design the wedding of your dreams, using your chosen providers.
We can offer you two parking places for your suppliers for the duration of the hire. We regret we have no parking for guests on site.
