Membership

The Bodleian Japanese Library (BJL), a dependent library of the Bodleian, is open to all students and academic staff of the University and Academic Visitors holding a Bodleian/University Card. As this library is intended primarily for those working on Japan and related subjects, other readers may have restricted access to some facilities.

Access and Support

All readers must obtain a Bodleian Library Reader’s Card (see Admissions) and carry it at all times when using the Library and produce it on entry or at any other time if asked to do so. Readers should sign the register at the counter on their first visit.

Weelchair access to the building is via the ramp at the College entrance; please let us know before you arrive. Library staff can assist with fetching books from the stack.

Inductions

For Postgraduates

General sessions (covering the use of the library, online catalogues, and procedures for locating and obtaining material) will be offered during 0th or 1st week of Michaelmas Term. They can be booked at the library desk (01865-(2)84506) or japanese@bodleian.ox.ac.uk. Graduate students are advised to book a further information skill sessions arranged individually on request (contact: izumi.tytler@bodleian.ox.ac.uk).

For Undergraduates

Introduction to the Bodleian Japanese collection for freshers and a review of catalogues and other electronic resources. This session is compulsory and should be signed up for at the Oriental Institute induction taking place on Friday of week 0.
