Design and print workshop

WitH five days of instruction in the Bodleian's printing workshop, you will design, type-set, illustrate and print your own booklet using hand-operated presses.

This course is designed to teach the three elements needed to make an illustrated book, typesetting, illustration and book-binding. Over the five days you will apply these skills to your own illustrated book and at the end of the five days you will have a completed, printed and bound book.

The course will run along the following lines:

Day 1: Book design and planning and illustration planning.
Day 2-4: Carving and printing illustrations, setting and printing type.
Day 5: Binding your book.

We will aim to make one hand-bound copy and a couple of soft-bound copies (the exact number may depend on the accuracy of your printing!). The type of binding will be decided on day one when you design your book, and we teach case binding and Japanese stab binding. We will provide all materials, but you do need to come with an idea for your book. We will discuss your book plan with you on the first day, ensuring that your plan can be completed in the five days.

Robin Wilson and Rosie Fairfax-Cholmeley are Artists-in-Residence for the University of Oxford and run art-based research at the Wytham Studio, Wytham Woods. Both are practising printmakers, and Rosie writes and illustrates books. They publish their own series of hand-made, illustrated books and collaborate with Richard Lawrence, Superintendent of the Bibliographic Press, producing illustrated, fine press books. They also teach relief printmaking and bookbinding in their own studio.

Participants must be over 18 years old. All materials are provided, no experience necessary.

Classes take place 10am-5pm on the following dates: 20, 21, 24, 25, 26 July 2019

The class will meet in the printing workshop, Schola Musicae, Old Bodleian Library. The room is accessible via a ground-floor entrance. Please report to the Bodleian Library Great Gate, accessed from Catte Street, upon arrival.
