Reading of the prose and poetry of Jenny Joseph by Miriam Margolyes OBE
The Bodleian is proud to commemorate the life and work of poet Jenny Joseph.
Buckinghamshire-raised poet Jenny Joseph won a scholarship to St Hilda's College, Oxford, graduating in English in 1953. She published her first poetry collection, the Gregory Award winning The Unlooked-for Season, in 1960. Her second collection, 1974's Rose in the Afternoon and other Poems, included what has become her most famous and widely anthologised poem, 'Warning' (When I am an old woman I shall wear purple). She also published short stories, children's books, prose and non-fiction work. She donated her literary archive to the Bodleian in 2017.
Award-winning actress, Miriam Margolyes, has an abundance of film and television credits to her name, as well as numerous appearances on the West End and Broadway. In 2002, she was awarded an OBE for her services to Drama.
