Description

Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth explores Tolkien's amazing legacy from his genius as an artist, poet, linguist, and author to his academic career and private life.

The exhibition takes you on a journey through Tolkien's famous works, The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, displaying an array of draft manuscripts, striking illustrations and maps drawn for his publications. Discover Tolkien's early abstract paintings from The Book of Ishness, the touching tales he wrote for his children, rare objects that belonged to Tolkien, exclusive fan mail; and private letters.

Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm
Sunday 11am-5pm

Booking

Entry to the exhibition is free but ticketed. Tickets can booked in advance online. Each online transaction is subject to a £1 booking fee.

There will be a limited number of tickets available on the day on a first come, first served basis. Further information can be found in our Tolkien exhibition FAQ.

The fastest way to book tickets in advance is online. To book tickets by telephone please call the Ashmolean and Bodleian Box Office on +44 (0)1865 278112. Telephone transactions are subject to a £2 booking fee.

Please note: tickets cannot be transferred or exchanged. To attend at a different time/date, please book new tickets. It is not necessary to notify us if you are no longer able to attend.

Warning: This exhibition features a relief map of Middle-earth that may potentially trigger seizures for people with photo-sensitivities such as epilepsy.
