This lecture will introduce the exhibition Designing English and give an overview of it. It will debate whether we can call the scribes, painters and engravers of the Middle Ages 'designers' - long before the word was used. It will take a closer look at some exhibits and will explain some of the ways that they were made. Are there signs of design in the most gorgeous of the illuminated books and weird and wonderful experiments in book making? Are there signs of it in the more humdrum, everyday books?
