Display extended due to public demand. The map of Middle-earth will now be on display during Friday 24 June, 9am-5pm.

A one-day display of recently-discovered map of Middle-earth annotated by JRR Tolkien.

The map, which was recently acquired by the Bodleian Libraries, reveals Tolkien's remarkable vision of the creatures, topography and heraldry of his imagined world where The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place. The map was a working document that Tolkien and acclaimed illustrator Pauline Baynes both annotated in 1969 when Baynes was commissioned to produce a poster map of Middle-earth.

The display features items donated to the Bodleian Libraries through the Friends of the Bodleian or acquired with the Friends' help in the past year.
