Parliament Week 2013

Women in democracy LogoParliament Week is a UK-wide programme of events and activities that inspire, engage and connect people with parliamentary democracy. It is delivered by the House of Commons with the support of the House of Lords.

The ongoing theme for Parliament Week focuses on ‘Stories of Democracy’. This year is focussing on 'Women in Democracy' – celebrating women’s contribution to UK democratic life and exploring how women’s voices can be better heard. The Parliament Week programme includes events and activities across the country that are open to everyone.

The Bodleian Libraries has been a partner of the Parliament Week initiative since it was launched in 2011. Each year we feature material from our modern political papers collection. Our previous entries can be read in the Parliament Week section on our website.

The Bodleian Libraries hold one of the largest concentrations of modern British political manuscripts and archives, providing a breadth of coverage which makes it a resource of national and international significance. The collections have been drawn from the private papers of politicians from all three major political parties, as well as from public servants (mainly diplomats), print and broadcast journalists, and others active in public life. In scale the collections range in size from over 2000 boxes to a single diary.

Our participation in the Parliament Week 2013 highlights sections of our collections which are directly connected with this year's theme:
