Religious Traditions Shared by Jews and Christians: the Menorah

In the Sanctuary of the Temple stood the Menorah, the golden seven-branched lamp stand with almond blossom decoration, described in Exodus chapter 25.For Jewish and Christian scholars alike, it was important to be able to show that biblical descriptions of the Temple and its furnishings were accurate portrayals. But the text of Exodus was not always clear or easy to follow, and it was possible to reach different conclusions about what it envisaged. Some scholars therefore employed pictorial as well as written interpretation. In particular, the Franciscan scholar Nicholas of Lyra used a series of comparative illustrations to show how Christian and Jewish readings of the biblical text differed.
