Bodleian Library Guides

DH group

The Library welcomes new members to its team of volunteer guides.

The volunteer guides, have been leading guided tours of the Bodleian Library for over 25 years. Guides lead tours of 60 and 90 minutes through the historic parts of the Library.

There are currently about 40 guides. Each guide commits to working a minimum of four hours a month. The hours are scheduled in advance every two months, to suit the guides, but they must be prepared to offer some weekend time.

New guides are issued with basic reference material from which they create their own scripts, after shadowing three experienced guides.

The Library is a busy tourist destination, welcoming visitors of all ages and nationalities and from a wide variety of backgrounds. Volunteer guides need to have a pleasant and courteous manner and good verbal communication skills. They need to be flexible and quick to adapt to changing circumstances, and they should be level headed and capable of dealing with any emergency which could arise when they have a group of people in their care.

The Library arranges a Christmas party for the guides, and there are a number of lectures and visits throughout the year.
