What can I access?

Bodleian Reader Cards allow access to a number of services:

Library Access

Bodleian Reader Cards give reference-only access to the Bodleian Libraries. Your current status, which you are asked to provide when completing the Bodleian Libraries' Admission Form, will determine the terms of access and the type of Bodleian Reader Card that you will be issued.

The Bodleian Libraries are divided into two groups: Group 1 and Group 2. Access to Group 2 Libraries is available to all holders of Bodleian Reader Cards in Vacation only, that is outside of the University of Oxford Full Term dates. Group 1 Libraries are available to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students in Vacation only, whereas research postgraduates have access to them in Full Term as well.

Modern Printed Material

Bodleian Reader Cards allow reference-only access to modern printed material, which includes all books, printed journals and newspapers, maps and music printed after 1800 (unless it comes under Special Collections material).

Holders of Bodleian Reader Cards are able to consult open-shelf modern printed material which is held by the Bodleian Libraries in reading rooms, as well as to order closed-stack modern printed material into reading rooms.

Details of how to order closed-stack material are given on admission to the Bodleian Libraries.

Applicants hoping to consult closed-stack material on the same day as they visit the Bodleian Libraries' Admissions Office for admission must have ordered material in advance. For more information about pre-ordering closed-stack material, click here.

E-Resources

Bodleian Reader Cards allow reference-only access to the great majority of e-resources to which the Bodleian Libraries subscribe. Holders of Bodleian Reader Cards do not have remote access to e-resources which, as a result, they may consult only when they are physically in one of the Libraries.

Holders of Bodleian Reader Cards should note that the terms attached to the use of e-resources do not allow their use for commercial purposes.

Online subscriptions to e-journals, e-books and other e-resources available to holders of Bodleian Reader Cards are only accessible from within reading rooms, either by logging onto the computer terminals provided in the reading rooms or through the readers' personal devices.

Holders of Bodleian Reader Cards accessing e-resources through personal devices will need to be connected to the Bodleian Libraries' wireless internet network and to SOLO (the Bodleian Libraries' online catalogue). International roaming services such as eduroam will not work to provide access to our e-resources.

Special Collections

Applicants seeking access to Special Collections (for instance, manuscripts or archival material of any period, ephemera, material published before 1801, material in a named collection, or other rare material) will need to make this clear as part of their 'Statement of Research Need' when completing the Bodleian Libraries' Admission Form, so that guidance may be provided. Applicants are encouraged in particular to include the details of any Special Collections material that they would like to consult initially, and a statement of how this relates to their current research so that we can advise them accordingly.

If permission is granted, readers will be issued with a Bodleian Reader Card, which indicates access to Special Collections material with an 'A' instead of 'S' above the barcode.

For more information about specific Special Collections material, please contact Special Collections:

Email: specialcollections.enquiries@bodleian.ox.ac.uk

Telephone: 01865 277150 (+44 1865 277150 from outside the United Kingdom)

Printing, Photocopying and Scanning

PCAS

PCAS is the Bodleian Libraries' system for printing, photocopying and scanning.

PCAS accounts are automatically generated when a profile is created and a Bodleian Reader Card is issued for the first time.

Login details for PCAS accounts will be given on admission to the Bodleian Libraries.

Using their PCAS account, holders of Bodleian Reader Cards are able to copy, scan and print using the self-service photocopiers available in reading rooms.

Photocopiers are available in most reading rooms.

Digital cameras may be used in some areas.

Not all material may be copied or scanned using the self-service photocopiers and the Bodleian Libraries offers a staff-mediated service for such material.

You can find our more about printing, photocopying and scanning here.

You can find further information relating specifically to PCAS accounts here.

All copying must be done within the terms of the relevant copyright legislation. You can find out more about copyright legislation here.

Scan & Deliver

A Scan & Deliver service is available to holders of Bodleian Reader Cards. This service allows readers to request scans of items held in the Bodleian Libraries' Book Storage Facility. The Scan & Deliver service allows readers to request scanned sections of closed-stack material directly to their desktop, without the need to request it into a reading room.

You can find more information about the Scan & Deliver service here.

Please contact scan@bodleian.ox.ac.uk with any questions or feedback relating to the service.

Library Help

Staff

Staff are available in most reading rooms and holders of Bodleian Reader Cards should feel free to ask any member of staff if they require help or guidance.

Straightforward enquiries are usually resolved immediately.

Complex questions involving specialist subject knowledge can be referred to a senior subject librarian or member of curatorial staff, who will be able to provide expert assistance. However, such assistance may not always be immediately available.

Most reading rooms and libraries produce printed guides, maps, plans and online guides.
