Staffed copying service

The Bodleian Libraries offer a staff-mediated photocopying service for items not eligible for self-service copying. You can request black-and-white or colour copies of material and collect them from one of our reading rooms or have them sent to you by post.

This service is available to:

  • University members
  • Bodleian Reader card holders
  • Non-library members

Over 7 million items held in our offsite Book Storage Facility are eligible for Scan and Deliver. This is the quickest and easiest way to order copies of material.

Using this service

Items are eligible for the staffed copying service if they are:

  • in good condition
  • published after 1800
  • up to A2 size (59.4 x 42cm) and up to 10cm thick; and
  • up to 4kg.

This includes items which are leather-bound, stapled or have foldout leaves.

At staff discretion, we can provide copies of:

  • Oxford University theses (see below)
  • inter-library loans (if permitted)
  • sheet music
  • sheet maps

You may have an unlimited number of copies, subject to copyright restrictions. For books and journals that are currently in copyright, you may receive one copy only. You will need to sign a copyright declaration for all requests to reproduce copyrighted material.

You can request copies for collection from a Bodleian Libraries reading room, or order copies for delivery by post.

Oxford University theses

Copying Oxford theses, even a single page, will usually require the author's written permission and must be done by staff via the mediated copying service. Reading room staff must receive written permission, or a photocopy of it, before we can accept the order.

The annual successful candidates list is in the Weston Library Enquiries Area. This will state the relevant college; the college’s development office can usually forward the permission request.

Restrictions will apply to many items. For guidance, email oxford.theses@bodleian.ox.ac.uk.

Manuscripts and rare books

Generally, manuscript materials cannot be copied, although staff may be able to provide a limited amount of copying from unbound and unpublished modern (post-1800) manuscript material. If you are uncertain, please ask staff for guidance before making an application.

Collect copies at a reading room

You can place orders for the staffed copying service in any of our reading rooms on any day up to 30 minutes before closing time.

  1. At the staff desk, please complete the blue PC2 form. Fill in all the details in ballpoint pen or pencil. Please do not separate the two sheets of the form. A separate form is required for each volume or issue.
  2. Remember to sign the copyright declaration for all requests to reproduce copyright material.
  3. Paper slips are available at each staff desk for marking sections to be copied. Please mark each extract to be copied at the beginning and end. Please note the page numbers of each section to be photocopied on the beginning slip. If you require colour copies, please tag them separately with a ‘colour’ slip.
  4. Hand the completed form to staff with the books.

The turnaround time for orders is 72 hours. You can pick up your photocopy orders from the in-trays adjacent to the Main Enquiry Desk in the Lower Reading Room of the Old Bodleian Library. Orders will be kept under your surname. Uncollected orders will be cleared after 3 months.
