Borrowing

Borrowing privileges are extended to holders of current (blue-stripe) University Cards only. New readers should present themselves with their card at the Main Help Desk for card registration.

All the collections on Floors 2 and 3 and some of the rest of the collections are confined to the Library and not available for loan. More details of confined items are given in the notes for new readers.

Academic and administrative staff may not borrow from the Classics Lending Library.

Readers can borrow up to 9 items in total, but no more than 6 from any one category (e.g. journals, Classics Lending Library, main collection, etc.). Readers with disabilities who have been assigned the ‘Privileged Reader’ status can borrow 12 items in total, but no more than 9 from any one category. The standard loan period is 1 week with three online renewals, or 2 days with no online renewals for journals. For Privileged Readers, the borrowing period is 2 weeks for all borrowable items.

Classics Lending Library books can be taken out for the entirety of the vacations, while all other books in the library retain their usual borrowing period throughout vacations.

Late returns are fined at the rate of 20p per book per day, or £1 per journal per day, up to a maximum of £10 per item. An automatic borrowing block is applied to any reader with fines over £10, or items more than 21 days overdue.
