The Paper Conservation Team undertakes interventive conservation treatments to stabilise the condition of works on paper and other materials such as parchment and papyrus, with expertise in treating vulnerable media as well as large formats and scrolls. Examples of our projects include conservation of Japanese Nara ehon, resewing Chinese printed books, treatment of illuminated manuscripts, and conservation of large parchment maps.

We also design bespoke mounting and housing; advance the understanding of our collections through the study of their materiality; and support the dissemination as well as the enjoyment of the collections through our involvement with digital programmes and exhibitions. We actively contribute to the conservation profession and the cultural heritage sector with conference papers and public talks; through participation in the work of the UK Institute of Conservation; and we support early career conservators through offering internship and work placement opportunities to conservation students
