Keeping the University reading
With our library sites and reading rooms now closed until further notice, the Bodleian Libraries are working hard to make it possible to keep the University reading.
While our physical services are suspended, we are continuing to provide, and expanding, our digital services. Students and scholars can take advantage of a wide range online resources that can be accessed offsite. Readers can also get support and advice through our Live Chat and enquiries service.
Return of Loans
The Bodleian Libraries will automatically extend any Bodleian Libraries items on loan until week commencing 12 October 2020. Fines will continue to be waived for all items.
If you have items on loan and would like to return them before then, we will be in touch in the coming weeks with more information on this process. If you are not returning to Oxford, we will make it as easy as possible to return items, regardless of your location.
Scan & Deliver
In late June we shall be resuming our Scan & Deliver service, this will start up from selected library sites with additional libraries and Special Collections following with a mediated service. The process for requesting scans will remain the same as before. This service remains free for now. For more information visit the Scan & Deliver page.
Click & Collect
From early July selected sites will be establishing a socially distanced borrowing service in which you can request items to loan as normal. Using SOLO you will be able to search for items that are available to be requested. Instructions will then be provided how to pick up your requests. There may be stricter limits on how many items you can loan to ensure a fair service. Any books borrowed during Long Vacation will not be due until 12 October.
For Inter-Library Loans (ILL), electronic delivery is now available free of charge, although physical ILL is suspended.
Resources accessible to all
Use SOLO to search physical and electronic items available across the University's libraries, including over a billion records for articles and other e-resources, both open access and restricted to members of the University of Oxford.
Oxford University Research Archive (ORA)
ORA provides open access to a wide range of articles, dissertations and other papers by Oxford academics and research students. Over 56,000 complete works available.
The University of Oxford entered into partnership with Google to scan the Bodleian Libraries' out-of-copyright holdings. The initial phase of this work was completed in 2009, with several hundred thousand of our books being scanned and made available via Google Books.
Open access materials
Open access materials, including a wide range of scholarly papers, are available to anyone via SOLO. Filter by Open Access at the top of the left-hand column of search results. Alternatively, enter keywords and then on the results screen choose Open Access in the Show only section on the left-hand side.
Resources accessible to University of Oxford card holders (Single Sign On required)
Access over 1.4 million e-books via SOLO. Filter results by Online Resources to find e-books that can be accessed offsite – look for the green Online access icon. Some e-books are not restricted to card holders. Find out more about information on accessing e-books on the e-books LibGuide.
The library is working with publishers to provide lots of extra access to online resources during this period. Over 5,000 new e-books have been purchased and added to SOLO together with a further 60,000 temporary e-books made freely available by publishers during COVID-19. Keep up-to-date with the latest additional e-books.
If you can’t find a book available as an e-book, then we may be able to purchase one, if it's available. Complete the book recommendation form.
Access over 118,000 e-journal titles via SOLO. Filter results by Online Resources to show resources that can be accessed offsite – look for the green Online access icon. Some e-journals are not restricted to card holders. On 7 April, Browzine was added to SOLO. This new suite of tools improves access to journal article PDFs and aims to provide a comprehensive journal service to researchers; this includes integration into SOLO, a standalone website and a browser plugin for Chrome to enable one-click downloads from around the Internet and when searching SOLO (including eLD articles which we have subscription access to).
Oxford Reading Lists Online
Explore reading lists for a selection of courses across all divisions on ORLO, with access to scanned book chapters where available. An expanded team of library staff is working with academic colleagues to create many additional lists for Trinity term.
Resources accessible to OUH NHS staff
Staff working in the OUH Trust can access a wide range of e-journals and other resources via NHS OpenAthens. Scan & Deliver services are also available. For information on what’s available and to register for NHS OpenAthens (or to reset your password), visit the NHS LibGuide.

Resources for Alumni
University of Oxford alumni have special access to a variety of online resources.
Library staff remain available to answer your questions and offer advice through Live Chat and via reader services. Hundreds of Library Guides provide information on subject resources or specific library services, including tips that may be particularly useful at this time.
A number of search engines specialise in scholarly open access resources, providing password-free access to academic materials across a wide range of disciplines. We have some suggestions of suitable resources.
Conditions for off-site access
Find out more about accessing resources off-site. Electronic legal deposit books, journals and web content cannot be made available beyond the physical premises of Bodleian Libraries under the terms of current legal deposit legislation. We have altered how these items display on SOLO to make this clear.

The service has been expanded to be available 7 days a week, 9am–7pm on weekdays and 10am–7pm on weekends.
